Welcome to the 4th grade! I am confidant this will be an extremely
successful and rewarding year for all.

Classroom expectations:

•Do your best in all that is done

• Be accountable for your own actions

• Cooperate with others

• Respect others and their property

• Take care of the environment

Classroom procedures:

I. Students will assume responsibilities for their assignments by:

•Keeping a daily assignment planner which will be signed daily by the parent and weekly by the teacher
•Keeping assignments/papers in organized folders or binders

Developing quality study skills

II. Late assignments:

•Late Assignments will not be accepted unless discussed with the teacher;

we encourage all students to turn all assignments in on time.
This will greatly benefit their final report.

III. Communication home:

Bi-weekly newsletters will be sent home on Fridays summarizing classroom activities

.IV Homework:

We will usually assign one to two weekly homework assignment, which will usually be a math activity. Mondays should be spent studying words in their personal dictionary for the spelling test on Tuesday.

Time should be spent each night reading (20 minutes) and practicing multiplication facts (10 minutes).

Work that is not completed during class time will be homework for your child. We will have a variety of long term projects/assignments this year that will include book reports, writing projects, and research projects. With the longer-term projects, we will send home a written outline of the specific guidelines and the due dates will be announced in advance

V. Absences:

Your child will not be penalized for absences, however they will miss out on interactive activities that are incorporated into our lessons. Assignments missed during the absence will be accepted.

VI. Grading:

This year is the second year of Federal Way School Districts new assessment policy. Each assignment will correlate with the new report cards used to determine if your child shall be promoted into the fifth grade.

B
Meets expectations, completed assignment correctly and followed directions. Good effort.

C Meets some expectations, didn't clearly follow directions. Minimal effort.

D Meets few or no expectations; didn't complete assignment. Poor effort.

F Didn't do assignment.

Curriculum:

I. Reading 

Your child will learn to:

Using Houghtin Mifflin Reading Series, Steck Vaughn Reading Strategies, Chapter Books

• Participate in literature groups, to read, discuss, and enjoy Fourth grade novels

• Learn to analyze literature elements such as characters, setting, problem and solution

• Develop a love of reading (Drop Everything and Read)

• Develop life long reading habits for pleasure and informational reading

II. Language Arts  

Writer's Workshop, Daily Check-ups, Language Software, Internet sites,

Your child will learn to:

• Use the writing process to publish literature

• Use figurative language

• Write different forms of poetry

• Develop communication skills

• Develop oral presentation skills

• Use skills involved with letter writing

• Spell correctly high frequency words in their writing


III Mathematics

Your child will learn to:

• Place value through 100,000 • Addition and subtraction of four and five digit numbers


• Multiplication and division facts of one and two digit numbers


• Fraction concepts of equivalency, lowest terms, and comparing
• Data analysis by reading, designing, and interpreting graphs
• Geometry: Parallel and perpendicular lines, congruency, classification of geometric shapes


• Time to the minute, pass the hour, and to the next hour


• Measurement: Estimate and measure length, weight, and capacity


• Multiple steps problem solving


• Estimation and mental math strategies

IV Health Your child will learn to:

• Practices basic aid techniques for fire, other emergencies, rescue breathing, and general first aid
• Investigate the effects and damage caused by drugs, alcohol, and tobacco
• Practice decision making skills and develop personal safety and assertiveness skills
• Increase social skills and learn about healthy relationships
