Happening in Room in Room 106! The fourth graders in Room 106 continue to have many things to celebrate! Individual Reading levels have increased at least one grade level by 65% of all students and at least two grade levels by 25%. Students who read books on their reading level have great success in reading. We are also celebrating the many creative and well written famous person reports that were completed and linked to our personal web pages. I admire and respect the students who take pride in everything they do! The week we return from Spring Break I will be presenting at a national conference in Portland called the NCCE which stands for National Council for Computing in Education. I will be sharing with many educators student web pages and ways to integrate the Internet into the classroom. I am so proud of the student work I will be sharing. Thanks for all you continued support!
Jeffrey Riley WASL Night On Thursday the fourth grade team held the first anual WASL night, where all parents were invited to learn more about the WASL test and learn what they can do to help their child be successful on the test. Provided to each parent was a packet that included tips, learning strategies and activities for their child to complete at home. These activities should not be completed independently but together with an adult. This will help insure understanding in a certain area. Unfortunately some were unable to attend. It will be important we them to look closely at the lime green packet coming home today in their childs Friday envelope. The success of any child includes the child, parent and teacher. Mrs. Stenersen was available to answer any question parents had about the WASL test and the importance of the scores achieved. Parents that would like to meet after spring break to discuss the WASL are be encouraged to call me WASL Testing Dates The WASL testing week will be May 4- 10. Testing will be each day and will end at lunch. Make up for any student who missed a day of testing during the week will be on Friday, May 11. Healthy WASL Snacks Each day of the WASL test a healthy snack will be provided for students. This will give them the energy and motivation to continue do the best they can do! Thanks to the parents who signed up to provide a snack or drink! FANTASIA 2000!! Last weekend I previewed Fantasia 2000 at the IMAX theater in the Science Center. I was amazed at the music and images being shown. I could not help but think of how much the students in our class would enjoy and value this experience. Fantasia is leaving the at the end of April. Unfortunately there is no time during school to take another field trip before the WASL. Therefore I would like to invite students and parents to join me at the Seattle Center on April 29 to see Fantasia 2000. I am looking for parents that would like to attend and be willing to transport students. After the movie we will have a picnic on the Center Lawn. I have seats reserved for the 10:30 a.m. show, which lasts for one hour. Each ticket is $6.00 ($4.00 off the regular price) Silent Auction! This year our class is creating a basket for the Camelot Carnivals Silent Auction. We are creating a Travel Basket because weve received a donation of two round trip airline tickets. Coming home today is a list of items we have brainstormed that would go in a travel basket. Please consider putting one item in the basket. All the money from this auction goes to PTA, who always spend money on KIDS! Anyone have a large basket to hold all the travel items or an another idea on how to put this together? Increasing Reading Levels Each child has a reading log which includes a list of books on their reading level. Please ask to see this book list and provide them opportunities to go to the public library to select these books. Until the WASL students are required to read 20 minutes a night.
Writing Practice If you are willing to work with your child on their writing skills please let me know and I will send home writing prompts and information on the writing process. Famous Person Reports Evaluations were given to each students on their report. If you have not seen this evaluation please ask your child. Making a Better Score! Students who are not pleased with the score they received on an assignment or project are welcome to re-do the areas that were incorrect or not completed. Then it will be re- evaluated and scored. WASL Practice In the lime green WASL packet there is a calendar for students to follow. Each day students are required to do the problem of the day (POTD) and one math activity. Parents needing help on any math should call me in the classroom (253-945-2519) or email jriley@fwsd.wednet.edu. I will get back as soon as possible with solutions. Parent Help Each Tuesday and Thursday we have five parents who spend one hour in our classroom working with small groups of students. This additional help will likely guarantee student success. This is an incredible gift!!!
